Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told the Senate it was time for Australia’s economy to compete for global investment and jobs.
“The time for us to focus on growth in the global economy — I think the United States economy is quite good, Japan’s quite good, we’re certainly pretty good, Germany’s very strong — is over,” he said.
“We have to do everything we can to try to stay competitive.”
The committee, chaired by the Environment and Energy Minister Greg Hunt, is looking at how the sector should adapt to the impacts of climate change and climate-induced shifts in technology and processes, such as natural disasters and climate-induced climate change-induced heat waves.
It also looked at ways to make the industry more efficient.
It also flagged the need to strengthen the country’s energy security and diversify existing energy sources.
“If we do not change course in terms of energy security in the coming decades we will be at serious risk of energy shortages,” the committee said.
The committee is set to give its assessment to Government by the end of 2017.
